AfriForum submitted our written comments against this bill to the Council of Provinces in March 2023. As part of this phase the Gauteng Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Infrastructure Development and Property Management created a separate opportunity for comments from the public in a provincial context. AfriForum also submitted written comments here, and participated in public hearings.

In September 2023 AfriForum continued the fight against the Expropriation Bill with an oral presentation before the Parliamentary Committee on Transport, Public Service and Administration, Public Works and Infrastructure in the National Council of Provinces building in Cape Town. Ernst van Zyl, AfriForum’s Head of Public Relations, presented a list of politically inconvenient facts on land and land reform in South Africa to the Parliamentary Committee, as well as a list of AfriForum’s solutions. It can be viewed here: https://youtu.be/R1qXo1Cgnbg.
If the National Council of Provinces approves the Expropriation Bill, it goes to the president’s office for signature. If this scenario plays out, AfriForum will announce its next steps to protect private property rights.
